The Pastoral Care Coordinator plans and supervises the activities of Chaplains responsible for assessing! and attending to the spiritual needs of patients, their families, and employees, particularly in times of spiritual distress brought on by life threatening or life altering medical diagnoses and procedures. Offers spiritual counseling and support through individual/group work, religious services, hospital celebrations and other supportive methods. Represents Bryan Medical Center within the local religious community and surrounding areas.
1. Supervises and assigns Chaplain caseloads and work activities; fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Bryan policies and requirements.
2. *Coordinates and integrates services within the department and with other departments.
3. *Assesses the spiritual needs of patients and families who have identified high risk spiritual care indicators; offers spiritual advice and counsel consistent with the spiritual and religious backgrounds of patient/family.
4. Acts as a liaison between hospital staff and fami! ly or friends of patients during periods of crisis, such as de! ath, critical illness, or lengthy surgery; responds to Code Blue and Code Trauma pages as appropriate.
5. *Provides counseling in matters associated with spirituality including meaning and purpose in life, healing, forgiveness and reconciliation; performs or makes arrangements for traditional pastoral services, such as prayer, sacramental ministry and other special services; provides ecumenical services as needed to promote spiritual well being.
6. *Serves as a member of the ethics committee providing clinical consultation on ethics issues.
7. Assists in developing hospital policies and procedures and standards of care and practice relative to ethical and human rights issues.
8. Uses relevant methodologies to assist physicians and staff in arriving at consensus regarding ethical matters associated with patient care and provides emotional and spiritual support to staff, patients and families.
9. *Facilitates communication with local religious leaders to a! ssure cooperation and understanding between Bryan Medical Center and the local church community.
10. *Seeks cooperation with and schedules various denominations to provide pastoral support and coverage at the time of crisis, i.e. sacrament of the sick reconciliation, etc.
11. Offers prayer support at hospital-sponsored events.
12. Participates in crisis de-briefing sessions with other staff after crisis/high stress situations.
13. Advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education inservices, reading periodicals/literature and seeking ongoing development opportunities.
Masters of Divinity from an accredited seminary required. Must be ordained and have ecclesiastical endorsement. Board Certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains required. Minimum of two (2) years experience as a hospital chaplain required.
