Role Description
Provides veterinary care and sample collection, records veterinary care and study documentation under the direction of either the Attending Veterinarian or Clinical Veterinarian(s), to support product release and experimental testing. The incumbent will also maintain Clinical Operationsâ (CO) veterinary supply inventories and assist with animal enrichment, personnel technical training, 3Rs activities, and animal care.
The incumbent Veterinary Services Expert will have similar responsibilities but in addition will be expected to develop special projects and work self-directed with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Attending Vet! erinarian or Clinical Veterinarian(s) the incumbent Veterinary! Services Specialist will:

Ensure humane care and treatment of on-site animals in alignment with animal welfare regulations, AAALACi, and corporate Animal Care and Use Guidelines
â¢
Support veterinary care and procedures
â¢
Support animal enrichment and refinement of animal testing procedures (3R initiatives)
â¢
Provide technical support for Research and Development (R&D), Reference Qualification (RQ), and manufacturing investigations
â¢
Assist with technical training
â¢
Assist with maintaining veterinary supply inventory
â¢
Assist with animal care as related to above duties

Qualifications
Both the Veterinary Services Specialist and Veterinary Services Expert postions require:

Associate 2 year degr! ee or Technologist 4 year degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited veterinary technology program
â¢
Must obtain and keep in active status a Nebraska Veterinary Technician license within one year of hire date
â¢
Must obtain AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within 1 year of hire date (or after date of eligibility)
In addition, the following is required for each specific position:
Veterinary Services Specialist:

2 years veterinary technician experience or 1 year laboratory animal technical experience
â¢
Must obtain AALAS Laboratory Technician (LAT) certification within 2 years of hire date (or after date of eligibility)
Veterinary Services Expert:
â¢
3 years veterinary technician experience or 2 years laboratory animal technical experience
â¢
Must obtain Laboratory Technician certification LAT within 1 year of hire date (or after date of eligi! bility)

Must obtain AALAS Laboratory Technologist (LATG) ce! rtification within 2 years of hire date (or after date of eligibility)
VETERINARY TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED: Demonstrated technical ability to identify/determine animal health issues; perform routine animal restraint and veterinary manipulations/procedures with large and small animals; Demonstrated math skills and the ability follow verbal and written instructions such as (SOPs)
GOOD RECORD KEEPING SKILLS REQUIRED: must be able to initiate and maintain readily retrievable, accurate, legible and timely written records of veterinary health issues - including health/behavior observations, diagnosis, plans for care and treatments, anesthesia/surgery records following current veterinary practice methods [e.g., Signalment/Objective/Analysis/Plan (SOAP)]; records must adhere to AAALACi standards, AWRs requirements and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED: must have demonstrated computer skills with knowledge of appropria! te software applications and email functions (Windows, Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook)
EXCELLENT COMMUNICATION SKILLS REQUIRED: Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills in the interactions with internal and external stakeholders and preparation of internal documents (e.g., SOPs, investigation and technical reports)
WORK ETHIC REQUIREMENTS: ability to self-manage and work independently in an animal facility with minimal to moderate supervision and to function collaboratively in a team environment; must have the ability to plan, organize and coordinate work with a high attention to detail to develop and drive projects (with management assistance) to completion; must have excellent interpersonal skills including demonstrated respect for people, trustworthiness and reliability; must possess the ability to effectively work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure open, timely and professional communication regarding all aspec! ts of animal health or use in testing and research.PREFERRED SKILLS: ex! perience with large farm livestock and horses as well as companion and laboratory animals; in-depth knowledge of USDA Animal Welfare Regulations; in depth knowledge of USDA-AWRs, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide) and the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching (Ag Guide) requirements; AALAS ALAT, LAT, and LATG certification or three or more years of relevant previous experience working in a laboratory/research animal care program; experience using computer software programs such as Visio and Access databases desirable; experience working in an AAALACi accredited institution is a plus; and a general knowledge of biological vaccinology, GMP requirements and previous experience with SOPs desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: No animal allergies or asthma; physically able to lift 50 lb routinely, perform multiple hand manipulations, work on their feet or stand for 90% of the day, work in harsh environmen! ts (e.g. high and low extremes of temperatures, chemicals, noise and odors); must be able to wear respirators and other required PPE for long periods.
On call and weekend work required and the incumbent must have a valid driver's license.
