Physician Assistant Surgical

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
¿ Functions within the scope of practice as defined within state regulations. The physician assistant scope of practice shall be detailed in the Role Delineation as comp! leted by the supervising physician; and the scope of practice ! will be defined by the Integrated Practice Agreement as completed by the collaborating physician. The Role Delineation and Integrated Practice Agreement shall be filed with the appropriate state licensing authority.

¿ Assists physicians in the management of surgical/medical care for patients as directed. Meets with the supervising physician as necessary to consult and/or review care.

¿ Performs as the surgical first assistant in the operative room. This will include all orthopedic surgical procedures as specified by the supervising surgeon.

¿ Participates in the preoperative evaluation and assessment of the surgical patient and implementation of the treatment plan in accordance with Alegent Health protocols, and as determined and directed by the supervising surgeon.

¿ Participates in the postoperative management of the surgical patient including wound assessment, suture/staple removal; and removal of drainage systems as directed by th! e supervising surgeon

QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience

Preferred: 3-5 years experience as an Orthopedic Surgery First Assistant.

Education/Licensure

Physician Assistant - Graduate of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in Nebraska and/or Iowa, license must be held in the state you practice.
Current Physician Assistant Certification from the NCCPA
BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Safety and Health Institute: CPR, PRO, must say ¿Professional Level-with AED¿, and American Heart Association: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledge of:
Professional medical ! practice and standards of care to give and evaluate patient care.
M! edical equipment and instruments.
Common safety hazards and precautions to establish safe work environment.
Medications and their effects on patients.
Patient education principles.
Organizational policies, regulations and procedures.
Principles of risk management, quality improvement, infection control and universal precautions.
Insurance protocols and referral requirements.
CPT and ICD-9 coding necessary to complete charge sheets.

Skills as demonstrated through:
Applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of medicine to provide ongoing care.
Taking medical histories, assessing medical conditions, and interpreting findings.
Preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients and their families, physicians, staff, and the public.

Ability to:
Perform a complete, appropriat! e and thorough physical examination.
Provide compassionate, empathetic patient care.
Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with physicians, patients and staff.
React calmly, effectively, and professionally in emergency situations.
Interpret and utilize lab data, medical imaging data, and other information to develop a plan of care.
Function at an appropriate level of independence, at all times working in collaboration with the supervising physician.
Project a friendly, courteous, and service-oriented image
