POSITION OBJECTIVE: The Surgical Technologist scrubs for surgical procedures and demonstrates competence while functioning as a member of the surgical team; this individ! ual also prepares and maintains supplies, instruments and equipment related to these procedures. Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of the Surgery Center. Ensure patient needs are met in accordance with instructions of physician and facility administrative procedures. Participates in various quality activities as appropriate and as directed by the Operating Room Charge Nurse, Director of Nursing, Medical Director and/or the Quality Committee(s).
Accountabilities / Responsibilities:
General Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs surgical team functions under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Prepares and maintains supplies, instruments, equipment and rooms for surgical procedures.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs specified functions to meet the requirements of each approved procedure.
Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to physiciansâ preference ca! rds.
Inspects equipment for proper working condition.
! Follows principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating/procedure room procedures.
Adheres to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for the procedure.
Arranges instruments according to given procedure.
Confirms that instruments work properly.
Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays.
Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and takes action according to policy.
Correctly uses, cares for, cleans, and sterilizes instruments, supplies, and equipment as directed.
Handles equipment and instruments correctly to provide appropriate availability and safety.
Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure.
Assists in storing and stocking supplies as directed.
Maintains and updates instrument cards and surgeonsâ preference cards.
Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician.
Doc! uments patient care records and other forms according to facility policies and procedures.
Accurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about the patientâs status.
Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate corrective and/or preventive measures.
Maintains confidentiality of patient and organization related information.
Supports the Surgery Center environment by acknowledging the presence and dignity of all with whom he/she communicates.
Interacts with diverse populations who may be under considerable situational stress.
Participates in and supports the Continuous Quality Improvement Program.
Participates in task forces and committees as assigned.
Demonstrates willingness to learn and accept changes.
Adheres to standard universal precautions.
Qualifications:
Education - Required:
High school graduate or equivalent
Completion of an appropriate technician program or previous tech! nician experience of at least two years
Must be current in BCLS
Education - Preferred:
Computer literacy
Certification preferred and as per corresponding State requirements
Experience:
Previous work experience in an ambulatory surgery setting, acute hospital operating room or in a related military medical setting of no less than one (1) year.

Ambulatory Surgery Center (with a focus in the semi-restricted and restricted areas; intra-operative and corresponding ancillary areas)
Well-lit and ventilated with potential exposure to hazardous equipment
OSHA, Category I - Does involve occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids and materials*
Physical/Mental Demands:
Ability to stand, walk and sit for considerable lengths of time
Ability to lift 75 pounds and can demonstrate a push/pull repetitive motion for! clinical health care workers
Visual and auditory acuity for freque! nt use of computer, telephone and occasional use of other office equipment
Visual and auditory acuity for timely responsiveness and patient-care assessment
Ability to move quickly in response to patient, employee, visitor or medical staff needs
