Job Summary
:
This supplemental position is for the OR /Surgical Services working variable shifts. Students who have not completed the Surgical Technology program, but are interested in permanent employment upon graduation from an accredited program. Student must be in fifth quarter or greater and the student must in good standing. Will at all times work under direct supervision of a registered nurse.
Essential Job Functions:
1. With minimal assistance plans for and prepares necessary instruments, supplies and equipment required for surgical procedures.
2. Demonstrates knowledge and technical skill in the care and use of instruments, supplies and equipment used to assist the physician in performing most surgical procedures.
3. Assists in circulating duties with a registered nurse, as directed.
4. Assists with prepping patient for procedure as directed.
5. Develops and maintains effective communication with patients, medical staff and hospital personnel.
6. Assists in positioning and draping the patient for the appropriate procedure.
7. Completes accurate sponge, needle and instrument counts with registered nurse.
8. Performs scrub duties such as handing of instruments, holding retractors, cutting sutures, and maintaining a sterile field.
9. Assists in proper care of specimens from surgical procedures.
10. Assists in cleaning and maintaining of surgical instruments.
11. Performs all work in accordance with accepted standards of sanitation, safety, and proper handling techniques.
12. Assists in room turnover and room cleaning.
13. Assists in transporting patients to and from surgery.
14. Assists in transporting blood products and specimens to and from the laboratory.
15. Maintains patient confidentiality.
Qualifications
Education:
1. High school graduate or the equivalent.
2. Complete fourth quarter as a student in an accredited Surgical Technology program.
Licensure/Certification:
1. Current CPR Certification.
Experience/Pre-Requisites:
Enrolled in a Surgical Technology accredited program
