The Chaplain assesses insofar as is possible the spiritual! and emotional needs of Medical Center patients. Care is taken to help patients and their families uncover their spiritual and emotional needs, to assist them in their efforts to cope with the mystery of suffering and to identify their own spiritual and personal resources. The Chaplain works with the members of the health team including physicians, nurses, social workers and Pastoral volunteers in helping the patient to regain his health.

This job reports to the Director of Pastoral Care.

Essential Duties:
Provides supportive care and pastoral counsel to patents and their families, addressing their emotional and spiritual needs by:

Welcome each patient in assigned area, explain the function of Pastoral Services and assess patient's emotional and spiritual needs.

Make follow-up visits to patients in assigned areas, provide education, prayer and pastoral counsel according to patient's needs and personnel available.

Provi! de support and counsel to patient's family especially during p! eriods of crisis such as critical illness, complex surgery or death.

Facilitate discussion on end-of-life care.

Informs the Catholic Priest Chaplain of requests for administration of any of the sacraments. (Administers Communion if approved by Diocesan Office)

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide spiritual care appropriate to the age and spiritual needs of the patients served.

Takes "Call" duty as assigned to assure pastoral care coverage on 24 hour basis.

Assists with the Pastoral Volunteer program as directed by the Director of Pastoral Care.

Collaborate within an interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing skilled spiritual care by:

Attending interdisciplinary team meetings.

Active involvement in committees, councils and community outreach as assigned.

Develop and implement spiritual enrichment programs for patients, families and staff.

Qualifications

Education:
Masters in Divinity or related field preferred.

Experience:
Sensitivity to emotional signs of sick people, and understanding and skill in counseling techniques.

Approximately one year related work experience necessary to gain understanding in the relationship of pastoral care to medical care.

Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, families and associ! ates, often during times of crisis.

License/Certification:
Certification with either The National Association of Catholic Chaplains or the Association of Professional Chaplains preferred.
