Conifer Health Solutions is currently hiring for a Patient Access Representative.

Hours: Part-time, 24 hours per week, night shift. This is a benefit eligible position.

! General Summary

Working under the general supervision! of the Patient Access Supervisor, greets patients and guests, processes all outpatient and inpatient admissions, pre-admissions, and transfers. Is usually the first contact with patients in the emergency room (ER), registers patients into the Admissions module of the MEDITECH system; assembles the initial portion of ER charts, and obtains room placements. Receives and logs payments on registered patient accounts for hospital services, and assists patients with insurance problems and questions. Registers guests for the Guest House and receives and logs these payments into the computer system.

Uses and discloses patient protected health information: 1) Only as it applies to job functions, 2) in amounts minimally necessary for intended purpose, and 3) in a confidential manner.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities Identifies and assigns Medical Record and Account numbers on all types of patients when completing a registration and prepares patient iden! tification bracelets. Interviews inpatients, outpatients, ER and recurring outpatients to obtain information such as; Demographics (patient's name, address, age, phone number, occupation, person to contact in case of emergency, attending physician, etc.), Insurance and Guarantor information (individual or insurance company responsible for the hospital bill) and inputs all information into the Admission Module of the MEDITECH system. Distributes information collected at the time of admission to various hospital departments as necessary. Secures signatures on forms, issues hand-outs and scans documents into the MEDITECH and VALCO systems according to established procedures and guidelines. Processes patient transfers to maintain bed placement and accurate census. Updates patient status and processes paperwork to insure accurate and timely billing. Enters payments on registered accounts for hospital services. Accepts reservations, collects registration/billing information and r! eceives payment for Guest House stays, logs activity into the MEDITECH ! system as necessary. Balances cash drawers at specified shift change and documents in logbook. Collects and distributes patient valuables; completes patient valuable forms; places and retrieves valuables in combination safe. Communicates patient/billing related information back and forth between patients, family members, and ancillary departments as appropriate. Organizes and prioritizes the flow of patients and guests at Saint Francis Medical Center Patient Entrances by determining their reason for visit, type of admission, and directs patients and/or family accordingly; prioritizes the registration of patients at the General Admissions, Short Stay Surgery/MRI Admissions, and ER Admissions entrances. Directs the traffic flow in the registration areas, answers questions when needed, observes patient waiting areas for any patient or family member that may need assistance, and escorts patients and/or patients' families to their destination within the hospital as necessary. As! sists ER staff by contacting Physicians, ancillary departments needed in the ER, Nursing Supervisor for room placement and Pharmacy needs, and Main Administrative Control Center (Main ACC) to request on-call personnel. Contacts Health Information (HI) for old records needed for patient care in the ER. Assembles the initial portion of the medical chart for newly registered ER patients and processes ER departure information to insure accurate records in HI; assembles necessary patient information for patient transfers, physician office requests, and ambulance services. Answers ER and Admissions telephones. Photocopies insurance cards, photo ID's, responds to unit inquiries and requests, and relays patient, Physician, or nursing related messages. Provides services for the Patient Accounting area when not being utilized by Admissions. Duties may include cashier functions, billing, posting, and collections as assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications

Minimum K! nowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Ability to read and write accu! rately, use a personal computer, and multi-line phone, comprehend and communicate complicated written and verbal instructions when entering orders for prescribed procedures, relaying information to patients or families at a level normally acquired through completion of at least 1 year post High School education in classes such as Business, Education Healthcare, Human Services, etc. Familiarity with medical terminology preferred; ability to type 35 WPM without errors. One year customer service or related work and approximately six to nine months on-the-job experience necessary to gain knowledge of Admission procedures and schedules, develop an understanding of insurance coverage and financial information and to become familiar with basic medical terminology. Interpersonal skills necessary to explain, in person and over the phone, hospital billing processes, discuss insurance information and inform of hospital policies and procedures when issuing hand-out information to patie! nts, families, nurses, and physicians, etc.; ability to remain calm in the midst of a crisis in the ER; handle distraught and/or angry patients/guests; and to deal with numerous interruptions with tact and poise. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 75% of work time when identifying Medical Record or Account numbers, registering patients, transferring patients, entering insurance information, taking payments or valuables, etc. Analytical skills necessary in order to receive and process accurate medical, billing and other admission and discharge information in order to admit, discharge, collect money, explain processes to patients /guests and correct registered account errors as well as perform ER responsibilities. Ability to lift, carry, push or pull supplies weighing up to 5 pounds 1% of work time, bend and/or stoop up to 5%, stand, walk, and/or push (up to 200 pounds) when assisting with patient transport up to 30%, sit up to 60%, and kneel u! p to 2% of work time.

Working Conditions Normal office environ! ment with little exposure to noise, dust, and temperature. Exposure to communicable disease 10% of work time and violent and/or combative patients and/or guests.
