The Patient Financial Services Assistant is responsible for assisting the Patient Financial Services office in the collection process and the over flow of per-certifications, scanning, handling of mail, insurance verification, insurance follow ups, and pre-registration of out-patient procedures.

  • Assists Pre-Certification/Insurance Verification clerk to verify insurance coverage & benefits for out patient surgery patients, assist with radiology and electro diagnostic pre-certifications as need.
  • Contacts the patient or his/her representative by phone to verify demographic and insurance coverage prior to the surgery date.
  • Contacts appropriate payers, verifying coverage and benefits via secured phone, in! ternet or fax.
  • Accesses Passport to verify Medicare c! overage, eligibility dates and other insurance coverage for the Medicare eligible patient.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of third party reimbursement requirements and regulations.
  • Exhibits working knowledge in the use of all registration and scheduling systems, electronic verification tools and Web based resources.
  • Assists Pre-Certification/Insurance Verification clerk with coordinating activities with hospital departments to meet pre-certification, pre-authorization and/or
  • Assists Pre-Certification/Insurance Verification clerk to communicate with the Radiology department and Multi-Specialty Clinic departments to access schedules and assist in obtaining necessary authorizations for patients on the Radiology & Surgery schedules.
  • Assists Pre-Certification/Insurance Verification clerk with coordination of activities with Primary Care or Admitting Physician to obtain diagnosis, procedure detail and complete pre-authorization requirem! ents as necessary.
  • Assists Pre-Certification/Insurance Verification clerk with activities with Utilization Review staff to verify insurance eligibility and meet pre-certification/pre-authorization requirements of inpatients and 23-hour observation patients.
  • Maintains a basic understanding of ICD and CPT codes.
  • Efficiently and accurately documents patient information, phone calls and personal inquiries in the Healthland system.
  • Follow-up on insurance non-payment claims relating to pre-cert or pre-authorization requirements.
  • Demonstrates ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Handles phone, mail and personal inquiries from and regarding patient accounts.
o Assists each person promptly, efficiently and courteously.
o Follow through on all issues identified as requiring action as a result of inquiry.
o Document all phone and personal inquiries in the current computer sys! tem.
o Performs duties with a minimum of supervision, exhibits inno! vation and good judgment as well as thorough knowledge of ethical and legal billing procedures.
Attends mandatory staff meetings.
  • Contributes to the prevention of infectious disease among employees and patients by adhering to infection control policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to adequate staffing of department by reporting to work at scheduled time.
  • Contributes to effective guest relations by assisting patients, visitors and physicians to resolve expressed concerns and demonstrating a welcoming and helpful attitude.
  • Conserves hospital resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to perform job duties.
  • Keeps information confidential by adhering to the terms of personnel policy concerning confidentiality.
  • Is subject to shift work and/or weekend work as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Job Qualifications:Education:
Required: Hig! h school diploma, or equivalent.
Preferred: Coding Technician Diploma

Experience:
Required: Computer Skills/Keyboarding
Preferred: One year experience in a health care setting involving customer service and involvement in patient admissions.

License/Certifications:
Required: None
Preferred: Certified Patient Accounts Technician (CPAT)

  • Ability to interact well with staff, allied healthcare personnel, patients, families, caretakers, visitors and physicians so as to project a positive image of Box Butte General Hospital and ensure a satisfactory experience for the patient.
