KEY REQUIREMENTS

DUTIES:
This position is located at the VA Medical Center (VAMC), Omaha, NE.

In this position you will be responsible for processing and preparing the complete range of clean and sterile medical supplies, instruments, and equipment required for patient care. The Medical Supply Technician will rotate through the various work assignments in Reprocessing, which include decontamination and preparation. You will receive and decontaminate used and contaminated items from a w! ide variety ranging from simple instruments to complex surgical items which will require skilled careful positioning of parts and the complete elimination of foreign particles.

You will prepare instrument trays, examine items to determine effectiveness of cleaning, inspect instruments, select the appropriate method of sterilization, test equipment and resolve problems encountered during the day to day work assignments.

Work Schedule: Two shifts available.

1st Shift:
7:30A.M. TO 3:30P.M. - 1 Vacancy

2nd Shift:
2:30P.M. TO 10:30P.M. - 2 Vacancies

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
GS-06 Specialized Experience: You must possess at least one full year of

specialized experience, to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of! the Medical Supply Technician. To be creditable, specialized experienc! e must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, Grade-05.

Examples of Specialized Experience include:
Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker (A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actua! lly spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position, salary/grade level, and the number of hours a week spent in such employment).

GS-06 Education: You must possess successfully completed six months of graduate education with courses directly related to the work of the Medical Supply Technician position such as medical supply processing, storage and distribution, sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to this position.

This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (Six months of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent six months of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 9 semester hours should be considered! as satisfying the six months of full-time study requirement. Part-time! graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to six months of full-time study at the school attended). (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consid! eration.

The Selective Placement Factor for this position is:
Dissemble, determine the appropriate methods for sterilizing, and process a variety of endoscopes and cystoscopes.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

1. Knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques, including sterile processing.

bility to operate sterilization equipment.

3. Ability to assemble, wrap, and store reusable medical equipment (RME).

4. Knowledge of Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) and Quality Control standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for prolonged periods of time, carrying medical su! pply items weighing up to 50 pounds, frequently bending and stretching/! reaching, and pushing fully-loaded medical supply carts weighting as much as 750 pounds which must be negotiated up inclines and over rises, or positioning them on sterilizer track rails. The work requires dexterity in such tasks as inserting small rods into needle openings or precisely aligning components parts while reassembling medical equipment. Tension and stress are induced by the critical nature of producing work results critical to patient care on pre-established time frames and in emergent situations. Workdays can be lengthened without notice by emergency surgery instrumentation needs.
