Under general supervision, transcribes pathology reports using a Dic! taphone. Performs general office duties such as answering the telephone, filing, billing and helping patients with their insurance billing.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Types anatomical pathology reports and letters from dictation. Proofreads typed copies and submits them to pathologists for review and signature.
Prints anatomical pathology reports daily and sends to referring physician or facility.
Upon receiving consultation reports from other facilities, completes a Consultation Review form, gives to pathologists for review and enters results into computer.
Files patient tissue reports and patient billings; updates records and bills as new information is received (e.g., file consultations with original report for patient).
Enters patient information from card file into Meditech as a historical requisition. Checks every surgical patient for card in old file.
Answers telephone (pathologist line and his! tology line) and directs calls to the proper person. Answers q! uestions that require no interpretation of results of testing both in person and on the telephone.
Operates computer for the purpose of billing the patient for the professional component (i.e., work by Pathologist) of tissue examinations. Prints fee sheets and checks fee sheets against the surgical requisition ensuring correct charges and ICD codes have been entered. Distributes fee sheets to pathologists and billing service.
Prints outstanding list for pathologists every morning and another outstanding list in the afternoon to check for accounts that need to be placed on hold.
Enters all accounts payable billing into Laboratory Information Systems.
Receives mail and sorts and distributes to proper persons.
Tracks slides and blocks that have been sent to other facilities ensuring timely return of material.
Qualifications
Education:
Ability to type and transcribe at acceptable levels of speed and accur! acy on word processing equipment in order to transcribe Pathology reports for patient medical records; read and write in order to understand and follow established procedures; and have knowledge of medical terminology at a level normally attained through completion of approximately nine to twelve months' medical clerical training beyond high school.
Experience:
Must have prior medical transcription experience.
Prefer candidates with prior medical office and/or medical billing experience.
Interpersonal skills required to answer questions taken over the phone in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and otherwise exchange factual information with patients, surgeons, nurses and other health care workers.
Licensure:
Must have and maintain at all times, a valid Nebraska Driver's License and good driving record for those instances in which the employee must operate a motor vehicle for work purposes (i.e. pic! king up specimens, Health Fairs, or attend offsite meetings).
