English Language Proficiency required. DUTIES:
This position is located in the Surgery Service.
Responsible for performing a variety of technical support duties that facilitate the work of physicians, physician assistant! s, nurses, nursing assistants, and other members of the medical facility who provide direct patient care. Medical Support Assistants (MSAs) are considered chief sources of patient care and patient flow information. The position typically has responsibility for the overall coordination of clinic cancellations, clinic schedules to include appointment scheduling and changes, arrangements for special studies, appointment check ins/check outs, consult tracking, verification of doctor's orders and treatment orders, completeness and accuracy of all actions/documentation, making transportation arrangements for patients, and relaying medical test results to appropriate professional medical staff for immediate action. Explain medical tests and exam instructions to be observed and test preparation procedures to the patient prior to appointment. Provide any related instructional sheets for special procedures and facilitates patient appointments; assure a medication list is provided to ! patient at each visit; relay any medication issues to the appropriate c! linical staff; and share other general information, initiating appropriate action as required. Initiate forms for authorization to perform surgery and other procedures, monitor the waiting areas for possible changes of patient conditions, and initiate appropriate measures in emergency situations.
WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday - Friday QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
English Language Proficiency. Medical personnel appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Experience and Education
Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or
Education. One year above high school; or
Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Grandfathering Provision. All MSAs employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualificati! on requirements for the title, series and grade held, that are part of ! the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply: (1) Such employees may be reassigned, promoted or demoted within the occupation. (2) Employees who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis, until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. (3) If an employee who was converted to title 38 hybrid status under this provision leaves the occupation, the employee loses protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry to the occupation.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS
GS-3 MSA (Entry Level)
Experience or Education: None beyond the basic requiremen! ts.
This is an entry level MSA position. It is expected that MSAs receive guidance from more experienced staff members and require frequent and direct supervision.
GS-4 MSA (Developmental Level)
Experience or Education: One year of experience in clerical or office work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position or two years of education above high school. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Ability to meet, communicate and interact with individuals from varying backgrounds and other health care team members in a courteous and helpful manner in order to complete job assignments. Ability to use various types of office automation equipment and software. Ability to set up, organize, and maintain record systems.
GS-5 MSA (Full Performance Level)
Experience or Education. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower g! rade level or 4 years of education above high school. In addition, the ! candidate must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports. Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Ability to make appointments in a clinical setting. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. Ability to identify customer's concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
