The Processing Team Coordinator works under the Director of Surgical Services. The ! Processing Department coincides with the Medical Center’s mission in serving patients by providing necessary supplies, equipment and services. The principle objective is to coordinate and maintain a smooth and efficient work flow in support for all customers requiring collection, processing, distribution and/or sterilization of materials.

Essential Duties:
Planning:
Provides assistance to plan, implement and coordinate short and long term goals plus assist with the development of budgetary! and staffing guidelines for the Processing Department.
Monitors and controls budget; makes adjustments according to trends in schedules.

Sets short and long term goals consistent with the department and hospital objectives and in line with SERMC strategic plan. Monitors and revises as necessary.

Works with the Director of Surgical Services and Surgical Services Business Leader to prepare and monitor operational and capital budgets for the department.

Organization:
Coordinates and supervises the operation of the daily activities which support the daily surgery schedule in collaboration with interdepartmental team members.

Assumes daily responsibility to obtain, coordinate and monitor utilization of personnel and supplies (includes monitoring ill time).

Assists and demonstrates leadership to staff to ensure that departmental and the Medical Center's short and long term goals/objectives are accomplished.

Acts as a resource person for problems in the Processing Dep! artment.

Works to maintain a positive team relationship with co-workers.

Monitors Report Express for Processing Department associates.

Will review direct, indirect and non-productive time to justify staff hours in relationship to the departmental activity, in collaboration with the Business Leader.

Plans agenda for departmental meetings. Posts minutes.

Accepts projects as assigned by the Director of Surgical Services; directs area activities during absence of the Director as requested or required.

Develops Staff:
Organize, develop, implement and modify schedule planning in conjunction with the Director of Surgical Services to develop staff members.

Collaborates with the Education Leader to identify and/or facilitate staff orientation and education as they relate to schedule planning and administration.

Contribute to development of Performance Improvement standards for implementation and maint! enance of ongoing program.

Is knowledgeable and demonstrates u! nderstanding of unit standards, policies and procedures and relates them appropriately to personnel.

Review and recommend policy/procedure revisions and staffing changes necessary for delivery of quality services to ancillary departments. Remain in compliance with regulatory agencies.

Monitors and supports staff attendance and participation at mandatory in-service education.

Completes skills validations annually.

Communication:
Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with all constituencies and cooperates harmoniously with others in the accomplishments of departmental goals in meeting the needs of quality patient care.

Communicates with staff and ancillary departments to define and resolve specific problem areas and ensure continuity of services.

Communicates department needs to all necessary personnel.

Demonstrates ability to work effectively with others and promote good interpersonal rapport a! mong others.

Leadership:
Demonstrates commitment to developing the Processing Department by acting as a positive role model for staff.

Participate actively in departmental meetings and committees to promote professional practice and problem solving; generates ideas and promotes change.

Attend in-service programs and seminars to enhance knowledge of schedule management and department specific issues.

Manages and utilizes time effectively.

Coordinates interview process or implementation of work improvement plans in collaboration with the Director of Surgical Services.

Assists in the development or monitoring of all regulatory agency guidelines (includes but not limited to JCAHO and OSHA). Ensures safe work habits, compliance with safety rules and regulations as well as adheres to safety policies and procedures.

Prepares, coordinates and assists in completing yearly staff evaluations as well as works wit! h the Director of Surgical Services to counsel and work with staff rega! rding personnel issues.

Uses a systematic coordinated process for problem solving and decision making to bring problems to successful resolution.

Uses sensitivity, awareness, and observatory powers to recognize potential problems and acts positively to resolve.

Demonstrates ability to effectively resolve conflicts.

Helps create an environment conducive to positive morale.

Demonstrates willingness to share talents, ideas and time for special projects beyond the scope of the regular work routine.

Understands limitations of self and seeks council and advice when expertise is not yet fully developed in a particular arena.

Duties Specific to Processing Team Coordinator:
Completes a report monthly summarizing quality programs.

Coordinates all departmental activities:
Sorting, racking, washing, assembly and sterilization of instruments.

Preparing case carts and specialty carts fo! r Surgery.

Disinfecting chemically all patient care equipment.

Receiving, storing and rotating supplies.

Distributing supplies and instruments.

Maintaining adequate inventory level of supplies, instruments and equipment.

Disposing of infectious waste.

Provides on-the-job training for all associates. Assures that staff are educated and knowledgeable in hazard communication, right-to-know regulations, principles of infection control, chemical disinfection, sanitation, packaging and sterilization techniques, inventory management, processing of instruments and all department policies and procedures. Assists the Director of Surgical Services in maintaining on-the-job training records for all associates.

Staffs department with adequately trained associates daily and works in the department during associate shortages.

Monitors equipment in the case cart, sterile processing, soil processing and Surgery soil hol! ds to assure proper functioning.

Works closely with Material S! ervices team to provide and maintain smooth flow of materials and services. Informs the Director of Surgical Services of any anticipated projects or programs that will affect material cost.

Provides input to the Director of Surgical Services for annual goals and objectives.

Qualifications

Education:
High school graduate.

Completion of Central Service Technician or Nursing program preferred.

Experience:
Two years experience in Processing or Surgery desired.

One year management experience preferred.

Excellent communication skills are necessary because of constant communication with associates, management, administration and manufacturers/vendors.

Requires basic computer skills or must be able to complete appropriate training within six months.

Must be organized and able to meet deadlines.
