Duties:
This position is located in the Pathology and Laboratory Service. Please see Duties section below for more information about! the duties.

The position is in the Histopathology and Cytopathology Sections of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The incumbent must have a wide range of knowledge and be able to perform a wide variety of procedures within the Anatomic Pathology Department, to include:
• preparing sections of patient tissue from surgery, biopsy, autopsy and animal (experimental) tissues for histological (microscopic) examination, and cytology specimen processing.
• Using the cryostat, the incumbent sections tissues, prepares slides, and stains slides for frozen section diagnosis when required, using specified stains to enhance visibility under the microscope.
• Perform a variety of delicate and complex tissue stains, including routine and special stains.
• Maintains the equipment in the Histology section and troubleshoots equipment malfunction and problems.
• Assumes duties in the morgue as an autopsy technician and assists pathologists in pos! tmortem examinations, and insures the proper body condition fo! r delivery to the appropriate funeral directors.
• Responsible for the overall cleanliness of the morgue area upon completion of the autopsy.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, with rotating on-call weekends

Qualifications & Evaluations

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement .
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-5) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

Responsible for preparing patient ! tissue from surgery, biopsy, autopsy and animal (experimental) tissues for histological (microscopic) examination and processing cytology specimens.

Prepares slides of specimens using specified stains to enhance visibility under the microscope.

Assists pathologists in postmortem examinations.

Maintains the equipment in the Histology section and troubleshoots equipment malfunction and problems.

There is no educational substitution for the GS-6 level.
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) based on your application for this position.

KSA 1 - Knowledge of procedures required for histopathologic processing of tissue, including fixation, dehydration, clearing, cutting, staining, and mounting of tissues.
KSA 2 - Extensive knowledge of basic sciences, especially anatomy, histology, gross pathology, surgical pathology, cytopathology and medical terminology.
KSA 3 - Ab! ility to assume duties in the morgue as an autopsy technician.

! KSA 4 - Knowledge of policies and regulations issued from Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service, CAP, The Joint Commission, and OSHA and their application within the healthcare system.

KSA 5 - Working knowledge of computer use to facilitate the accessioning of patient specimens and the transcription of pathology reports using the VISTA system.

KSA 6 - Knowledge and skill sufficient for the operation of and the maintenance of complicated instruments and equipment.
